The accumulation of PrPSC, the protease-resistant abnormal form of the host-encoded cellular prion protein, PrPC, plays a central role in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Highly sensitive/accurate specific detection of pathological prion protein in many different samples is a prerequisite for attempts to develop reliable detection methods. In this review, we describe the trend in recent development of diagnostic methods for prion diseases and their applications in prion biology.
